Police resort to explosives

An overnight standoff ended in police officers using explosives to reach a man barricaded in his apartment.

Police breached the third-storey window in the early hours of Sunday morning. Witnesses told CTV the incident took place in the area of 12th Avenue and 6th Street in New Westminster.

Neighbours heard hammering noises, and phoned police. While the source of the noises is unclear, the situation ended up with the tactical team being called in.

Officers were seen on the roof of the home with guns drawn, and police reportedly used several devices to set off explosions and gain entry into the apartment.

"My neighbour came over and knocked on my door saying there was some crazy stuff going on outside," one resident said. "Some guys on this roof here put some explosives on the windows — windows went 'boom'… They brought him out, took him out of his little jumpsuit and hosed him down."

Witnesses described a man being brought out of the building in a yellow jumpsuit. No information is available yet on what the man was doing in the apartment or why the standoff began.
