Search suspended

The search for missing Vernon teacher, John Keeley on Mabel Lake has been suspended. 

The request was made by RCMP.

Vernon Search and Rescue were called down, however, RCMP will continue to look for the missing 58-year-old kayaker.

An extensive search of the lakeshore was conducted.

If information comes up that would require the search to resume, crews will again be dispatched.

Keeley went missing Wednesday. Search crews did locate his locked vehicle on Mabel lake forest service road and his unattended kayak.

The search for John Keeley, 58, on Mabel Lake has been suspended at the request of the RCMP.

Coralie Nairn, with Vernon Search And Rescue, told Castanet police asked the search be at least temporarily suspended Friday afternoon.


The search for a missing North Okanagan man has entered its third day. 

58-year-old John Keeley was last seen at his home Wednesday afternoon preparing for a kayaking trip to Mabel Lake. Keeley was reported missing after he didn't come home for dinner.

Police and Search and Rescue began looking for Keeley Wednesday night.

Keeley's vehicle was found locked and parked on the Mabel Lake forest service road, and his Kayak was found unoccupied on Mabel Lake.

Keeley is a well-known Vernon Secondary School math teacher. School District 22 has released a statement on Keeley's disappearance. 

"School District 22 was saddened to hear one of our own, Mr. John Keeley, a math teacher at VSS, has been reported missing," said Superintendent Joe Rogers. "Our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time."

RCMP have not yet provided a Friday update on the search.
