Searching for kayaker

The search continues for a missing 58-year-old man on Mabel Lake. 

Police say John Keeley was reported missing last night when he failed to come home for dinner. He was last seen at his home around 1:30 p.m. 

Police say they have found Keeley's locked car parked near the 22 km marker of the Mabel Lake forest service road, and have also found his unoccupied kayak on Mabel Lake.

Vernon Search and Rescue and RCMP began their search last night and resumed it again at first light.  

Keeley, as described by RCMP: 

  • Caucasian man
  • 188 cm (6'2") tall, 
  • 82 kg (181 lb), 
  • bald head and hazel eyes. 
  • No clothing description or photo of Mr. Keeley is available at this time.

Vernon Search and Rescue have been mobilized to Mabel Lake in the North Okanagan after a kayaker failed to return Wednesday evening.

Leigh Pearson, with VSAR, confirmed a call went out last night and again this morning for searchers.

The age and gender of the kayaker are not known and few details of the search are available.
