“Our officers will continue to escort motorists in alternating directions, only when it is safe to do so and the public should prepare for sudden closures for undetermined amounts of time,” he added.

UPDATE: 5:30 p.m.

Highway 97 has temporarily re-opened to singe-lane traffic between Summerland and Peachland.

"As a short term measure, RCMP have opened the highway to single-lane alternating traffic with RCMP escort," DriveBC says.

The release adds the highway is expected to be closed "for the night" beginning at about 8 p.m.

At that point, the fastest alternate route for drivers would be through Princeton — via the Okanagan Connector, Highway 5A and the Crowsnest Highway.

Smoke from the highly-visible Mt. Eneas wildfire has created poor visibility along the section of the highway.

The fire is believed to have started during Tuesday night's thunderstorm. The BC Wildfire Service has not provided an estimate on the size of the blaze.

RCMP are urging the general public to avoid the area for their own safety, and well-being, as well as the safety and well-being of emergency personnel operating in the area.

RCMP are also reminding the public that they must stay clear of firefighting aircraft that are collecting water from our lakes in the region, including Okanagan Lake.
