Falling tree kills hiker

A female hiker passed away after being struck by a tree while hiking near Campbell River, Tuesday evening.

RCMP said the 57-year-old Williams Lake woman was hiking with her daughter, roughly three kilometres from Ripple Rock trail, when the tree fell and hit her.

She succumbed to her injuries despite efforts from her daughter, a nurse and one other hiker, a former military medic, to revive her.

"The Campbell River RCMP are very sorry for the loss of this mother and give their deepest condolences to her family," police spokesperson Cpl. Ron Vlooswyk said.

It's unclear what caused the tree to topple over.

The B.C. Coroners Service is now leading an investigation into the incident.
