Saves family from fire

She may be humble about her actions, but according to Brandon Colvin, his neighbour is a hero.

Colvin said his neighbour, who asked not to be identified, was going on her regular morning walk Tuesday when she spotted a fire at his home.

“Around 6 a.m., we were asleep and we heard somebody yelling and screaming in our backyard. We got up and I guess the lady was on her morning walk and she noticed the house was on fire,” said Colvin.

There were four adults and two children in the home at the time.

“I ran outside, grabbed the garden hose and started spraying the fire and she kind of just went on her way,” said Colvin.

By the time the fire department arrived, he had the flames mostly put out with the garden hose.

The fire was working its way into the walls so fire crews tore out part of the wall to make sure the flames were fully extinguished.

Colvin said had it not been for his neighbour, things could have been a lot different.

“By the time I got the hose out there it had already started spreading to the second floor,” he said. “It could have been a lot worse, that's for sure. That lady was quite the hero, I would have to say.”

Colvin said he also recently installed new, hardwired smoke detectors but they did not go off, making the warning from his neighbour even more important.

“It's really weird. The house was full of smoke, but they did not go off. The fire department tested them and said they were working,” he added.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
