'Fire, fire!'

Contributed

A large fire was quickly extinguished on Vernon's East Hill late Tuesday evening.

The blaze believed to be caused by a lightning strike caught a fence and hedge on fire near 25th Avenue and 14th Street, says a nearby neighbour, Lennard Winslow.

Multiple neighbours came out to hose down the blaze.

"We come outside and the next thing I know someone is banging on my door with a fire hose, yelling fire, fire," said a neighbour. "I run out the back of the deck and I could hardly breathe the smoke was really heavy and then I realized it was coming from across the road."

"All the neighbours ran out with buckets and hoses, we pretty well had it under control."

Fire crews arrived on scene and the blaze was quickly extinguished.

The 1200 to 1400 block of 25 Avenue and the 2400 block of 14 Street remains without power, as well as the 1300 block of 26 Avenue.

There is no estimated time of when power will be restored.
