Residents living on Wood Lake watched as numerous air tankers dropped down into the lake to grab water to help douse a wildfire burning near Dee Lake Road.

Denise Weldon tells Castanet News the tankers have slowed down, but many boaters were in the way on Monday.

“Need to complain about all the boaters that have remained on the lake,” she said.

A video captured by Weldon shows boaters coming quite close to the air tankers.

Other residents also echoed Weldon saying boaters need to stay out of the way so the pilots can do their job.

UPDATE: 8 p.m.

A wildfire burning in an area between Coldstream and Lake Country has grown to seven hectares in size.

BC Wildfire Service information officer Marla Catherall says the provincial agency has dispatched 28 firefighters, two helicopters, air tankers and one piece of heavy equipment to battle the blaze.

There's no indication whether crews have been able to get a handle on the fire, now known as the Dee Road Fire.

The fire broke out sometime just after 3 p.m.

Smoke can be seen from both Kelowna and Vernon.

No structures are threatened, and no cause has been determined.

UPDATE: 4:40 p.m.

The BC Wildfire Service said they responding to a wildfire near King Edwards Lake, southwest of Coldstream.

Marla Catherall said crews and air tanker are responding to the fire currently.

“It is about two and a half kilometres northeast of King Edwards Lake,” she said. "From Kalamalka Lake it is roughly 8 kilometres east."

Smoke was visible from both Kelowna and Vernon just after 3 p.m.

BC Wildfire Service said at this point it is not clear how large the fire is.

A wildfire has broken out high above Wood Lake on Monday.

Smoke was visible just after 3 p.m. and is burning above the east bench of Wood Lake.

A Castanet News reader sent a photograph of the smoke from Okanagan Lake and said he could see smoke near the Lake Country area.

"We can see a large plume of smoke from Kal Beach looking southeast," said one reader.

Fire chief Steve Windsor said the wildfire is burning in a high plateau area.

"BC Wildfire Service has been notified and are responding," he said.

Castanet News has called BC Wildfire Service and is awaiting a response.
