New trash bins on the way

Residents of Summerland will see changes to their garbage pickup starting this week, following district council adopting a new solid waste management bylaw Wednesday morning.

New curbside garbage bins will be rolled out and delivered to residents between July 12 and 28.

"Those who live in areas that receive service on Tuesday will have their carts delivered first, then Wednesday routes, then Thursdays, then Fridays. You may start using your carts as soon as they arrive," read a release from the district's Facebook page.

Previously, residents used blue bags that were hand-loaded into garbage trucks. No exemptions from the new program will be allowed for the first three months.

The changes also coincide with what will be a $3.40/month hike in regular garbage fees for residents, up to $14.50 from $11.10. Participants from multi-family dwellings will see an increase from $3.50/month per participant to $5.

The higher fee is a result of a regular renegotiation of garbage service contracts, not the new bins.

A standard 120-litre garbage cart, 240-litre recycling cart and 240-litre yard waste cart will be provided. Upsizing options are available for additional fees.
