Solve clues, earn freedom

Chelsea Powrie

Do you think you've got what it takes to solve clues to earn your freedom from a locked room? A new Penticton business is giving you the opportunity to prove your smarts with several themed escape rooms.

Desmios Escape Rooms opens Thursday on Nanaimo Avenue near Martin Street. It's the first business of its kind in town, and is locally owned.

"Basically, you come in, with a group of your friends, you can do all the way up to eight," said co-owner Peter Katsabanis. "We lock you in a room, and you have one hour to solve all the puzzles in the room and escape the room."

Thursday's opening features two themes, "Sherlock Holmes" and "The Last Evil Cabin on the Left."

"It's pretty terrifying, so if you like getting scared, it's definitely one to go to," Katsabanis said.

Kayla Sande tried a preview of the cabin room on Wednesday, and loved it.

"This was my first time in an escape room, I've never done it before. It was fun, at first I was like, 'Where do I start?' But once you see something, it just goes from there," she said, adding that while she doesn't want to ruin the surprise, participants can expect plenty of scary moments.

"It definitely got my heart pumping," she said.

Desmios will have two additional rooms opening in August, one haunted hotel themed and one called School of Magic, which is aimed at families and kids.

"It's kind of like a Harry Potter theme, so it's got that whole aspect for kids," Katsabanis said. "It's something for everyone, so it's great."

The company also does corporate events after hours. Regular admission is $30 per person, and Katsabanis recommends coming in a group of around six people.
