Cave crisis can happen here

B.C.'s Cave Rescue Service says drama that unfolded in Thailand with the rescue of a boys' soccer team and their coach from a flooded cave can happen here.

And, the joint Alberta-B.C. team says it's time they received government funding.

The dramatic Thailand rescue shows the importance of having a highly skilled team and specialized equipment, says member Doug Munroe.

"When we run exercises, it can take upwards of three dozen rescuers 12 hours to move a single person 200 metres through a cave," Munroe told CTV.

Vancouver Island is the site of several cave rescues each year.

"It doesn't happen very often, but when it does, you need a lot of people who know what they're doing," Munroe said.

The province refunds the group for operational expenses when it calls for assistance, "but those refunds don't cover our costs of equipment and training," he added.

The team has written to Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth in hopes of securing permanent funding.
