Serious injuries in fire

UPDATE: 12:15 a.m.

Multiple people have been taken to hospital with serious injuries after an explosion and fire at a West Kelowna home.

When firefighter arrived on scene they found a fully involved structure fire and multiple people with serious injuries.

West Kelowna fire chief Jason Brolund said three people from the single family residence were taken to hospital.

The fire broke out just before 9:40 p.m. on Wednesday at the home on Elliott Road, which residents nearby say is a rental property.

Neighbours said they heard screaming after an explosion shook multiple homes in the area.

"There are no further details on their condition at this time," he said.

Firefighters fought the difficult blaze from the outside of the building due to the structural damage and risk of further explosions.

Seventeen firefighters and seven apparatus responded to the fire. Additional off-duty personnel were called in to protect the city, while they fire was being fought.

Fire investigators are on scene conducting a preliminary investigation. A full investigation is expected to take place tomorrow along with the RCMP.

UPDATE: 11 p.m.

Firefighters are still battling what appears to be a difficult fire to extinguish at a home off Elliott Road in West Kelowna.

Witnesses at the scene say they are seeing flames flare up still as of 11 p.m. on Wednesday.

There has been no word if anyone was injured in the fire.

Residents nearby heard a loud explosion just after 9:40 p.m., some even saying pictures fell off their walls.

UPDATE: 10:30 p.m.

Smoke continues to fill the air in West Kelowna after a fire broke out beside a home off Elliott Road just after 9:40 p.m.

A woman tells Castanet News she went to the house with a fire extinguisher but was told to get away.

She says the fire was right beside the house at first.

"She kept telling everybody to go away, then there was a smaller explosion," she said. "Then the house caught and the hydro lines came down on the driveway."

It is not clear what started the fire. 

UPDATE: 10:15 p.m.

Firefighters are working to extinguish a fire that appears to have started beside the home and spread to a home nearby. 

The address of the home is believed to be 3008 Elliott Rd. 

Residents tell Castanet a large plume of smoke has filled the sky and the streets are blocked off with police cruisers and fire trucks. 

It's not yet clear how the fire started, but numerous people say they heard a loud explosion before the fire broke out.

UPDATE: 9:55 p.m.

Residents who heard a loud explosion said a fire broke out in West Kelowna.

James Gordon said the explosion came from the corner of Elliott and Harold roads.

ORIGINAL: 9:45 p.m.

Multiple firefighters are responding to what appears to be a structure fire in West Kelowna.

A witness nearby said they heard a loud explosion followed by people screaming just after 9:40 p.m. Wednesday.

The woman added that she can see flames and smoke filling the sky. Fire trucks can be heard in the background, rushing to the scene.

"It looks like a house maybe," she said. "Neighbours closer, too, said their whole house shook."

Initial reports indicate the fire is off Shetler Drive.
