Escaped horse hit by car

Ridge Meadows RCMP tell Castanet that a horse has been euthanized following a collision with a vehicle. A passerby who stopped to help also became pinned under the horse after trying to help.

The incident happened Friday on the 22000 block of 132nd Avenue in Maple Ridge. Police were called after they received reports of a horse in the ditch.

The riderless horse had escaped its holding area and jumped out from a driveway into oncoming traffic. An eastbound car struck the animal and the driver immediately pulled over and called police.

During the collision, the horse fell to the ground due to damage to its legs and made its way down an embankment into the ditch.

A passerby attempted to comfort the wounded horse, but due to the unpredictability of an animal in pain, she inadvertently ended up being pinned underneath the horse.

A nearby veterinarian attended the scene, and sadly the animal was euthanized.

The injured passerby was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
