Vernon

The longest day

Chantelle Deacon

The time has already come where the days get shorter.

June 21 is the longest day of the year and Allan Brooks Nature Centre in Vernon celebrated the summer solstice by unveiling their brand new sundial.

"We are officially unveiling our new sundial," said Vicki Proulx, events and communications coordinator at ANBC. "It's a really neat educational tool to show people  how to tell time if they don't happen to have a watch or a smartphone."

"Basically you pretty much just find the month that you are in, it's very easy to use," she said. "You put this long stick called a gnomon in there and it just shows you what time it is.

The ABNC teamed up with the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada – Vernon to build the first Analemmatic Sundial in the Greater Vernon area.

The ABNC provides visitors with a first-hand opportunity to see and learn about the Okanagan's unique and diverse natural heritage through views, information, programs and displays of the region's natural areas.
