Cute chick on osprey cam

A real treat for bird lovers of all kinds.

An osprey chick has recently hatched in plain view of a worldwide audience.

The image of the chick, interacting with mom and dad can be viewed on the FortisBC Osprey Cam up and running on Benvoulin Road in Kelowna.

An unhatched egg can also be seen in the nest.

FortisBC corporate communications advisor Tanya Laing Gahr says the egg was laid about four weeks ago and hatched four days ago.

The second egg was laid a few days after the first, and could hatch at any time, if it's viable.

This is the eighth year for the osprey cam, and Laing Gahr says its an exciting time, because the birds don't lay eggs every year.

"Last year was a bit of a disappointing year; they didn't have a family," she said.

"When they come back and establish a family, that's exciting for us because it's an indication that it's a successful breeding pair, and the platforms we set up so they can have a place to nest are also successful.

With the birth of the chick, Fortis is asking viewers to submit ideas for names. Sadly, she says, her suggestion of Fishbreath McHawk Face was rejected immediately.

Some of the names submitted recently include Titan, Wonder and Uno.
