Homeless pets need love, too

The shelter hosted a Pet Fair and People Care event Saturday, at which a range of services were offered to homeless and marginalized people, along with their pets.

The event was hosted by Community Veterinary Outreach, a charity that hosts similar events across B.C. It was the first such event held in Kelowna.

Services for pets offered included grooming, nail trimming, preventive flea treatment and microchipping, along with food and toys, while their owners could take advantage of the services of dental hygienists, a pharmacist, two nurses and social workers on site.

Plenty of dogs, cats and even ferrets walked through the doors of the downtown Kelowna shelter during the event.

With its success, Cornerstone hopes to run a similar program in November that will offer preventative veterinary services, along with flu shots and STI testing for the pets' human companions.

Check out the gallery of photos of the happy pets and their owners from this past weekend.
