Sledgehammer break-in

A man in a grey Adidas hoodie snuck under scaffolding on Bernard Avenue, pulled out a sledgehammer and shattered the front door of a business.

Security camera footage captured him hitting the tempered glass and metal gate outside MacDermotts On Bernard repeatedly trying to break in.

He finally managed to smash his way in just before 2 a.m., and was only in the store for a few seconds.

The objects he went through all that work for were man purses.

Jay MacDermott and her husband showed up to their men’s clothing store Wednesday morning to see their front door destroyed.

“It will cost in the thousands to fix just the one side of the door,” she said. “And now we have to have security because that scaffolding is going to be up for a while.”

MacDermott said they are still trying to determine how many purses were taken but each one is $200 to $500.

“Must be a quick sale, somebody must need some quick money,” she said.

Scaffolding was put up outside their store last week and ongoing construction is being done on the Towne Centre Mall. The MacDermotts said scaffolding conceal their door and made them an easy target.

“We are here and we employ people from the community and we are just trying to keep a good business going,” she said.

Two other businesses just metres away have also been robbed this year. Naked Cafe was broken into in May and also Wild Kingdom was robbed at gunpoint in January. Just this week, Garden of Eden was also robbed by armed men.

Police are currently investigating this robbery and anyone who recognizes the man should contact RCMP.
