Butchers of Shambhala

Head to one of this summer’s career fairs, and you’ll see the usual mix of mostly tourism, agriculture, and retail industries clamouring for new workers.

However, another organization is popping up this year along with the hotel chains and big-box stores, and it’s one you likely won’t expect.

The Shambhala Music Festival has been hitting the career fair circuit hard this year as it looks to fill thousands of vacancies across just about every type of profession.

Each year, Shambhala builds and dismantles what is essentially an entire business organization, thousands of employees strong, over the course of just a few months.

This year, the festival will hire 2,800 people as it builds six unique departments from the bones of last year’s crew. By the time the week of the festival hits, the campus will have grown into the largest city in the West Kootenays.

“That means we have to have all the infrastructure that a city has: the fire department, the hospital, civil services, basically whatever we need to run a city,” Nicole Seaboyer, the festival’s director of human resources says.
