Vees reel in Island goalie

The Penticton Vees have reeled in a new goalie for next season from Vancouver Island.

The team announced late Thursday that 19-year-old netminder Derek Krall has committed to Penticton for the upcoming season.

Krall spent the bulk of last year playing junior B in Nanaimo. He was voted the top goalie in the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League; in 27 games, he was 18-7-0 with a .921 save percentage and 2.76 goals-against average.

The native of Crofton also played four regular season B.C. Hockey League games with the Powell River Kings, going 3-1-0 with a .947 save percentage. He played in three playoff games as well, posting one win and a .923 save percentage.

“Having a chance with Penticton is something that I’ve kind of dreamt of. I got to see them win the Fred Page Cup in Nanaimo in 2015, so to see that and now to be able to throw on the jersey is pretty special to me," Krall said to Vees play-by-play voice Craig Beauchemin on pentictonvees.ca.

Krall will join the team in August for training camp, the Vees said.
