Wreck Beach body

UPDATE 10:55 a.m.

BC RCMP tell Castanet the RCMP's Major Crime Unit is now working with University RCMP after the body of a man was discovered floating in the waters off of Wreck Beach near UBC at Pacific Spirit Regional Park.

The Canadian Coast Guard was initially called out just before 3 p.m. after a passing boat operator saw what he believed to be a body in the water some distance offshore from Wreck Beach. Vancouver Police Marine unit also assisted with the recovery of the body.

The unidentified body was brought to Vanier Park Beach in Vancouver and the University RCMP and BC Coroners responded. A sailboat and rowboat believed to be associated with this incident has been towed to a nearby marina for further examination.

An update will be provided once more information becomes available.

RCMP and the Coast Guard began their search after the body of a man was discovered near Wreck Beach Monday afternoon.

Eyewitnesses report seeing the body of a middle-aged man dead on a dock but few other details have been confirmed.

RCMP say a sailboat and a small, green dinghy are central to their investigation. It's unclear at this time whether investigator's suspect foul play, however, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has not been called in to assist in the case.
