Race raises thousands

If you happened to notice a lot of people running around town in a hurry Saturday, they were likely part of Vernon's third annual Heroes Amazing Race.

The fun challenge, for people aged 12 to 65 raises money for the local cancer treatment centre.

Heroes Amazing Race has raised more than $55,000 since it began in July 2015.

This years race raised about $6,000.

"Heroes is special to Vernon to because of its level of community involvement," said organizer Lindsay James. "The race has 15 checkpoints that are hosted by local businesses who register earlier on in the year, it promotes tourism."

"It is the only event of its kind in the Okanagan and allows its participants to truly act like a kid."

James lost a very good friend to cancer.

“Melissa fought bravely for three years,” said James. “She lost her battle, but her legacy lives on through this fundraiser. This year, profits from the race will be donated to The Cancer Clinic Comfort Fund at Vernon Jubilee Hospital. The comfort fund is designated by the doctors and counselors at Cancer Clinic to patients expressing a need for financial support while dealing with cancer.”

Yesterday's sunshine and warm weather made the event even more successful and fun for the competitors.
