Campbell River wildfire

A 12-hectare wildfire near Campbell River is being fought by air and ground.

The fire sparked Wednesday in a logged-out slash area and briefly caused the evacuation of the Quinsam Coal Mine.

The mine's rescue team helped fight the blaze until BC Wildfire Service crews arrived.

Two helicopters and 19 personnel are fighting the fire, which appears to be human caused.

"We haven't had a significant amount of rain in quite some time, and a few weeks of warm dry weather, it doesn't take long for areas to dry out and for the fire hazard to increase," Wildfire Service spokesperson Brandi Burns told CTV.
