Take a hike, don't get lost

The Vernon Outdoors Club wants to tell people to take a hike - and be safe when they are doing it.

There are hundreds of backcountry hiking trails in the area, but finding your way can be a challenge for a beginner; especially if you end up on a poorly marked path that fades away and you suddenly have no idea where the trail is.

The VOC is hosting a session on hiking GPS navigation for complete beginners June 20, 7-8:30 p.m. at the Vernon Library.

The event is free.

“VOC's session is designed for individuals who want to explore backcountry trails and is aimed at those who are considering buying a hiking GPS, or have one, but have no idea how to use it,” said Ritchie Leslie, VOC president.

“Knowing where you are is an essential part of back country safety and this session is aimed particularly at hikers and ramblers who want to venture into more remote terrain.”

VOC activities include cycling, hiking, rambles, snowshoeing and social events.

Annual membership to participate in all these activities is $25.

Information and schedules can be found at the VOC website.
