Political sign rules tightened

The City of Penticton has somewhat tightened its bylaws around political signage in advance of October’s municipal election.

Candidates in the election will now be constrained to 13 areas for signage on public property.

Some of those include roadsides along Sudbury Beach, Riverside Park, the SOEC and the Ellis Street roundabout. There will be limit of a total of 16 square feet of signage per candidate per location.

City bylaw will also be more aggressive this year removing illegal political signs, such as those on telephone poles or in vehicular lines of sight.

The changes were approved by council Tuesday in an effort to clean up existing signage bylaws that have been often misunderstood or not followed in previous years.
