Plume of smoke, hedge fire

UPDATE: 4:50 p.m.

The large plume of smoke seen in downtown Kelowna was a hedge fire according to the Kelowna Fire Department.

At approximately 12:15 p.m. the Kelowna Fire Department received a call reporting a hedge on fire in the 2200 of Richter St.

Multiple 911calls followed as the large plume of smoke was visible from many parts of the city.

The first arriving officer reported that approximately 20 feet of cedar hedge had been consumed by fire.

The blaze had been mostly extinguished by the residents using two garden hoses and a fire extinguisher.

Kelowna fire crews put out all hot-spots in the area upon arrival. 

The damage was contained to the hedge.

The cause of the fire was deemed accidental in nature.

Residents are reminded that open burning within Kelowna in prohibited.


UPDATE: 3:15 p.m.

The large plume of smoke has dissipated.

At this time it is unclear what caused the blaze.

Castanet has reached out to the Kelowna Fire Department and is waiting for a response.

A large plume of smoke can be seen rising above downtown Kelowna.

The fire appears to be in the area of Highway 97, between Richter and Ellis Streets.
