Serving up a fundraiser

More North Okanagan children will get a chance to participate in sports thanks to the Vernon Leos and KidSport program.

Shane Wright, with the Greater Vernon KidSport chapter, said the annual breakfast fundraiser held Friday morning in the old Canadian Tire parking lot, will help dozens of kids get involved in sports.

“We help financially challenged kids get into sports and activities,” said Wright, adding all of the money raised from the $5 breakfasts goes to KidSport.

“We fund about $150 per child,” said Wright, adding last year the breakfast raised just over $1,300 and this year they are hoping for $1,500.

Volunteers from the Leos - the kids' version of the Lions Club – were cooking pancakes, sausages and serving coffee.

More information on KidSport can be found online.

KidSport is a national not-for-profit organization that provides financial assistance for registration fees and equipment to kids aged 18 and under. Through a confidential application process the group provides grants so kids can play a season of sport.

Nationally, KidSport is comprised of a network of 11 provincial/territorial KidSport chapters and 166 community KidSport chapters. Since its creation in 1993, more than 750,000 kids across the country have been given the chance to play sport through KidSport grants and sport-introduction programming.
