Swept away by river

A man has been swept away in the Squamish River, and a search remains underway.

On May 13, around 1 a.m., Squamish RCMP received a call from a woman who said her friend had fallen into the Squamish River and could not be located.

The woman had been camping with her friends near Ashlu Forest Service Road, near Squamish, when her male friend fell backwards into the river. Witnesses said he was "swept away" and lost in the darkness.

Squamish RCMP attended along with Squamish Search and Rescue and a helicopter and police dog services.

"The Squamish RCMP and Squamish Search and Rescue will be working together over the next days to locate the man, but the search has been difficult and dangerous due to the high water levels and extreme current from the spring melt," said Cpl. Sascha Banks.

"We are asking those in the area who see anything in the river or along the riverbanks to contact the RCMP immediately.  The male, from Kenya, is in his mid 20s and is thought to be wearing a white t-shirt, grey sweatpants and a black Adidas hoody."

The RCMP are working on locating the man's next-of-kin before releasing his name.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the RCMP at 604-892-6100.
