Stunter riles up commuters

UPDATE: 4:55 p.m.

A stunt devil who was previously captured standing on top of his motorcycle driving down Highway 33 without a helmet was spotted doing the same thing on Thursday.

But this time, he was wearing a helmet.

He was originally seen in a red hoodie standing on his moving bike between Loseth Road and Springfield Road on Wednesday.

On Thursday, he was spotted in the same area just before noon.

Daryle Greenizan, Owner of All Weather Driving School, said the man actions were “very stupid.”

“It’s very dangerous not just for him, but what happens if he falls off and goes and hits somebody else,” said Greenizan. He’s not thinking about other people he’s just showboating.”

According to Greenizan, there is no place that riders can perform stunts safely in Kelowna.

“They do it in Vancouver and they arrange private lots for stunting,” he said.

Those riders dress in full gear, including helmets and body armour.

“Their bikes are set up so that when they crash they aren’t leaking oil and gas all over the place,” he said. “Stunting is fine if you do it professionally, in a closed area with proper gear. What this guy is doing is just stupid.”

ORIGINAL: 1:25 p.m.

A dangerous motorcycle stunt on Highway 33 – without a helmet – is raising the ire of Kelowna motorists.

Witnesses say they saw the man stand up on the seat of his motorcycle and “spread his arms wide like a crucifix” on Wednesday.

“You can’t believe what it looked like. It was terrifying,” said Marilyn, who was driving with her husband at 9:45 a.m. and witnessed the incident.

The rider continued the dangerous manoeuvre all the way from Loseth Road to Springfield Road.

RCMP tell Castanet they were made aware of the situation and conducted patrols to search for the man.

“They were unable to locate the motorcyclist, who had been last seen travelling along Highway 33 towards Highway 97,” said Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey.

One motorcycle rider contacted Castanet with an image taken later that afternoon of what he believes is the same stunter. He said the daredevil is putting the public and himself at risk.

“It is dangerous already to ride in Kelowna, as is. We don't need to make it any more dangerous,” he said.

Marilyn said she was shaking watching the rider.

“You have to be absolutely crazy… I guess it’s a stunt, you practice it, but surely you don’t practice without a helmet, or on Highway 33 of all places,” she said.

O’Donaghey said the driver could face several charges under the BC Motor Vehicle Act and a possible seven-day impound of his bike for stunting.

“They could even face criminal charges of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle,” he said.

Riding a motorcycle without a helmet is a $138 fine, and driving without due care and attention another $368.

Anyone who spotted the daredevil is asked to contact Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300 and cite file number 2018-21243.
