Hwy 1 work near Golden

Construction on a section of Highway 1 west of Golden is underway.

During the Donald to Forde Station Road project, crews will expand a 2.5 km stretch of the highway to four lanes, as well as improving access to the commercial vehicle safety enforcement inspection station.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure posted on its website the work will improve safety and free-flow of traffic, particularly trucks, to and from the Golden weigh scale.

"This weigh scale is designed to enable more efficient movement of commercial vehicles through the province. Once a commercial vehicle has been checked through this weigh scale, it can bypass all subsequent scales for up to 12 hours."

This project is part of a much larger project providing upgrades along Highway 1 between Kamloops and the Alberta border.  The Province has committed $464 million to this program over the next three years under Budget 2018.

The $10.3-million contract for the Donald to Forde Station Road project awarded Barrie Mackay Contracting Ltd. of Cranbrook.

"The total estimated project of $19.4 million is cost-shared, with the Government of Canada contributing up to $7.27 million through the Provincial-Territorial Infrastructure Component of the New Building Canada Fund, and the Province providing the remaining $12.13 million," stated the ministry.
