VPD prepares for worst

Vancouver Police have issued a public safety warning in the wake of Toronto's deadly van attack.

“If you're walking by yourself on the street, don't have your head down, be aware of where you are and what you're doing,” Sgt. Jason Robillard told The Canadian Press.

The VPD said it doesn't have enough information to determine if the attack will change its security measures, but it can't predict when a driver might target public spaces.

Police have escalated security at special events following similar attacks in other cities, including placing garbage trucks and other barriers at public gatherings such as on Canada Day and at the Celebration of Light fireworks.

Vancouver's former chief planner says barricades have started appearing worldwide to defend against such attacks.

"There's the great risk we will try to turn our streets into bunkers, not only to feel safe but to look safe, like the street is impregnable," Brent Toderian told CTV.
