Bus tracker months away

BC Transit is getting ready to roll out its much-anticipated real-time bus location technology.

But, Kelowna transit riders will have to wait until the fall to take advantage of the new tracking system.

The system, known as NextRide, will roll out in Nanaimo next month then the Comox Valley in June.

Transit systems in Squamish and Whistler will get the system in the summer, followed by Kelowna and Kamloops in the fall.

Victoria will be the last market to gain the system late this year, or early in 2019.

NextRide uses technology which will allow transit users to track the location of their bus in real time.

Riders will be able to plan their trip from an internet-connected mobile device or desktop computer.

Customers already on-board a bus will be able to use their mobile device to see, and hear, upcoming stop information.

“These service upgrades will be hugely helpful for people who already ride the bus, and a great incentive for more people to start,” said Claire Trevena, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure.

“We are committed to making BC Transit service more convenient and accessible, and I expect transit users will be thrilled with these improvements.”

Customers will also receive alerts in case of detours, accidents, or other events that could delay regular service.
