Wine centre study funded

The federal and provincial governments have agreed to fund a feasibility study for a BC Wine Excellence Centre, a facility Penticton is a top contender to host.

The centre would act as a platform for wine and tourism for the industry and educate visitors about B.C.’s wine regions and the winemaking process. It would link the wine industry with tourism and post-secondary institutions.

"As the B.C. wine industry undertakes development of a long-term vision and strategy for our industry, a wine centre of excellence has the opportunity of playing a major role of ensuring the viability and longevity of our industry,” said BC Wine Institute CEO Miles Prodan.

The Governments of Canada and B.C. are contributing a combined $175,000 for the two-stage feasibility study expected to be complete this summer.

Penticton MLA Dan Ashton has been seeking to secure Penticton as the host community for the centre, a promise former Premier Christy Clark made while campaigning in Penticton last year.
