Bubbles, smoke at Sails

Alanna Kelly

Bubbles filled the Kelowna Sails' fountain and smoke was seen coming from a manhole right beside it on Sunday afternoon.

Firefighters responded to the scene just after 11 a.m. after being alerted about the smoke.

People crowded around the manhole as firefighters lifted the lid and found smoke coming from a pump underground.

Jordan van Besouw was running by the fountain at 11:15 a.m. when he smelled something burning.

“It smelled like burning and smoke was coming out of the grate and foam in the fountain,” he said.

When he ran by the fountain at about 9 a.m. there was just foam in the fountain.

Platoon Capt. Steve Roshinsky said the pump might have over heated and caused the smoke.

“No flames, and it just smells like a bearing might have seized up,” he said.

Roshinsky said he is not sure if the two incidents are related.

“Not really too sure, I imagine it made it work harder and caused the issue,” he said.

City of Kelowna staff are heading to the scene.
