Mural honours Humboldt

A mural at Kelowna's Innovation Centre is paying tribute to the 16 people who lost their lives in the Humboldt Broncos bus crash this month.

The mural, in the lobby of the building, changes regularly.

“Typically, we put a question up on the wall so it's meant to be interactive,” said Leslie Thomson with the Innovation Centre. “We usually have chalk markers out for people to write their answers.”

The current mural has the names of the 16 people who died in the crash, along with “Love and thoughts for Humboldt” on the wall.

While they originally put out markers for people in the building to add their thoughts, they've since removed the markers and left it as is.

“We quickly realized that that's a really hard thing to ask,” Thomson said. “There really isn't anything to say in this scenario.”

In lieu of words, people have been leaving their hockey sticks against the mural, in solidarity with thousands of people across Canada.

“We put out a few sticks and we didn't realize that people would come and bring their own sticks, so that was neat to see,” Thomson said.
