Transformer in harm's way

Alanna Kelly

Those driving along Loseth Road on Kirschner Mountain might not even notice the crack on the side of the road.

But a closer look will show a shift in the ground that spans almost 15 metres. The worst part, it's right beside a FortisBC transformer.

“Currently, our crews are monitoring the situation,” said Diana Sorace, FortisBC spokesperson. “The land that is near it has moved.”

After assessing the scene, FortisBC determined the transformer is stable and has not yet moved.

The City of Kelowna has been notified about the land slippage.

If the transformer was damaged, about 400 customers in the area would be impacted.

“We will take necessary steps to ensure our structures are protected if required,” said Sorace.
