UPDATE: 3:20 p.m.

No one was inside a house when a fire completely gutted a family's home near McCurdy Road.

Multiple animals died in the blaze, according to platoon captain Kelly Stephens with Kelowna Fire.

Firefighters worked quickly to knock down the fire from the exterior before entering the structure.

"They did a primary search and found four dogs, one cat and a duck that had unfortunately perished in the fire," Stephens said.

The property owner said he drove by the house at around 1:30 p.m. and "didn't see anything."

Firefighters and RCMP received calls about the fire at 1:48 p.m. Crews had difficulty accessing the home as it is located on McKenzie Road but faces McCurdy Road.

"Fire damage was contained to the rear of the structure’s main floor and deck with heavy smoke damage to the rest of the structure," Stephens said.

The family who was renting the home has not yet seen the damage.

"Emergency Support Services were notified that the one adult and two children of the home would be unable to stay in the residence and would need support," said Stephens.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time but Stephens said it did not appear suspicious.
