'A torrent of water'

B.J. McGill says it happens every time there's a storm, and the city won't do anything about it.

McGill and her husband live on Lower Glenrosa Road in West Kelowna, between Powers Creek Community Church and what was the Westbank Museum.

She says Thursday's intense rainstorm sent a torrent of water through her property, leaving behind mud, gravel and debris.

"All the culverts in Glenrosa have been directed to go through our backyard," McGill said Friday morning.

"When everything melts up top and it rains ... if there's a thunderstorm, you'd better head home because the backyard is going to flood."

McGill said her husband and son have spent much of the morning clearing rocks and debris from the catch basin, but she says there is still a lot of running water carrying enough debris to jam up the grate.

"You're talking to one frustrated woman here," she said.

"We've been fighting about this for years. And now, with  a new development above us, that drainage is also going into our backyard now. It's coming at us from all sides."

McGill has about an acre of property and uses much of it to grow organic vegetables.

She says she's 71 and can't keep digging in the trenches.

Despite that, she says they have no plans to leave.
