Historic sex assault sentence

David Murray, a former Pitt Meadows city councillor who has been convicted of sexually assaulting a minor will learn his fate today.

David Murray, who resigned from his position at city hall following his conviction last October, will be sentenced Wednesday.

The crime happened 20 years ago but was not reported until 2016.

The Crown is asking for a nine to 12-month jail sentence, while the defence wants a six-month conditional sentence.

During Wednesday's hearing, the victim told Murray, "What you did to me changed me forever."

Not making eye contact with the former councillor, she told him she felt vulnerable and ashamed about her body after the assault.

Her words brought loved ones inside the courtroom to tears.
