Valley schools up for prize

Three Okanagan Valley elementary schools are up for a big prize in an Earth Day challenge honouring eco-friendly education.

Ellison Elementary and Okanagan Landing Elementary, both in Vernon, as well as West Bench Elementary in Penticton are all in the top 100 finalists for the prize worth $20,000 awarded through the Superpower Your School prize.

A promotional video for the contest said things like greening your community, being energy-efficient or reducing landfill waste help qualify schools for the $20,000 worth of technology, provided by sponsor Staples, that will be awarded in April.

The contest, which has been running annually since 2015, is open to any publicly funded elementary or secondary school in Canada, though no Okanagan high schools made the top 100 this year.

There are 10 top prizes to be won, two of which will be awarded in the B.C.-Yukon region. The three Okanagan schools are currently three of only 20 finalists in that category.
