Bystander killed

A bystander died following an incident in which a man was chased down and fatally shot outside a busy bowling alley on Saturday night, Toronto police said.

Two shooters fired bullets toward the doors of the Playtime Bowl on Saturday night, striking 29-year-old Ruma Amar and Thanh Tien Ngo, 32, said Det. Rob Choe.

"Mr. Ngo was the intended target when Mrs. Amar was shot," Choe told reporters on Sunday afternoon, adding that the two didn't know each other.

He said Ngo had been there socializing with at least one other person, but left the building before two armed suspects pursued him back to its doors and fired.

"We believe Mr. Ngo was confronted," Choe said.

"He was pursued, shot at, and I believe he was seeking shelter within the bowling alley itself."

The detective noted that bullets had damaged the building near the entrance, and said Ngo was found badly injured inside the building.

Amar had been at the bowling alley with her husband and sister, he said, and happened to be leaving the building when shots rang out.

Choe said others may have been injured in the incident, trying to leave the building in a frenzy after the shooting.

He said investigators are looking for three suspects: the two shooters and a getaway driver, who may have fled in a dark vehicle.

Police had already spoken with at least 10 witnesses as of Sunday afternoon, Choe said, and were in the process of collecting surveillance footage from the surrounding buildings.

He asked anyone who may have witnessed the incident or knows why Ngo might have been targeted to contact police.
