Dead geese shock hikers

Conservation officers are looking into the discovery of at least 50 dead Canada geese on Vancouver Island.

The birds' carcasses were found dumped along a trail in Errington, north of Nanaimo.

A local Facebook post said a resident heard gunfire and "the screaming of the geese" before coming across the dead birds the next day.

Migratory bird hunting is legal, with a daily bag limit of 10 and possession limit of 30 on Vancouver Island.

The latest open season for Canada geese ended March 10 in the Nanaimo area.

It appears the birds may have been legally hunted, as the thighs, feet and breast appeared to be removed from the birds.
