Shots fired, gun seized

Alanna Kelly

UPDATE: 12:30 p.m.

A resident who lives nearby the house where multiple bullets were fired says she has lived in the area for over seven years and numerous people come and go from the house.

She said they often enter and leave the property from the back alley.

RCMP said a distraught man inside the home was taken into custody.

"He may have been under the influence of an intoxicating substance or substances at the time of his arrest," said Cpl. Jesse O'Donaghey.

The man who called 911 told Castanet he heard at least three "pops" and they sounded "almost like a firecracker."

RCMP said this incident is concerning.

"Anyone who could have been walking by that residence at the time or driving by in a vehicle could have been struck with one of these stray bullets," said O'Donaghey.

ORIGINAL: 9:53 a.m.

A 31-year-old man was arrested after what police are calling a “careless shooting” at a home in Kelowna, Saturday.

Numerous gunshots were heard by neighbours of a home on Coronation Avenue between 9 and 10:30 p.m.

A man who lives next door tells Castanet he called RCMP after he heard gunfire.

“I came out for a smoke, and I walked out front and there was a guy facing me out the glass window and he had his hands in the air and had a look on his face of urgency,” he said.

RCMP found a distraught male inside the home. He was taken into custody without incident.

“RCMP arrived on scene and noted damage to the glass of the front sliding patio door, which had been shattered, along with property damage, consistent with being shot, to the home's wooden fence and to a motor vehicle parked directly in front of that residence,” said Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey.

The neighbour said he heard the side door slam shut, and he believes police arrested a man in the back alley.

“Police had secured the scene, obtained a warrant to search the property and subsequently seized a firearm from within the residence,” said O’Donaghey.

The investigation continues, and police do not believe anyone was injured as a result of the careless discharge of a firearm.

The suspect is expected to appear in court today.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300.
