KSS threats 'not valid'

Police were inundated with calls from concerned parents on Thursday evening after rumours started circling on social media about Kelowna Secondary School and a student making threats.

RCMP said in a release that the alleged threats were "not valid."

“Kelowna RCMP did in fact receive information this afternoon in regards to some threats and fully investigated this matter and revealed that the alleged threats were not valid,” said Sgt. Brad Swecera.

The principal and faculty of the school were also made aware and advised of the situation.

RCMP are reminding students and parents of the risk of using social media to spread inaccurate information.

This incident comes just days after numerous students at a West Kelowna school said they would not be attending class Friday because a student reportedly threatened to carry out a shooting.

“The RCMP takes such information seriously and readily acted to fully investigate this matter,” said Swecera.

More information is expected Friday morning from police and Castanet will update as soon as possible.
