Cops nab stabbing suspect

Police agencies near Chilliwack came together to get a dangerous man off the streets.

RCMP Staff Sgt. Steve Vrolyk said on Saturday, March 3, just after midnight, Chilliwack RCMP responded to a report of a male with a knife in the area of Yale Road and Nowell Street in downtown Chilliwack.

“While still en route, officers were advised that a victim had been stabbed. A 34-year-old male was taken to hospital for significant, but not life-threatening injuries,” said Vrolyk.

Abbotsford Police stopped the suspect vehicle approximately a half hour later on an unrelated matter. The suspect, Robert Giesbrecht, 33, was subsequently arrested and appeared in Chilliwack Provincial Court charged with assault with a weapon.

“This is an excellent example of the seamless communication and co-operation which occurs across not only jurisdictions but also police agencies,” said Vrolyk. “We would like to extend our thanks to the Abbotsford Police Department for their ongoing assistance.”

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact the Chilliwack RCMP at (604)792-4611 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
