Boat fire by bridge

Fire crews had their hands full after an early morning blaze on a boat near the Pitt River Bridge this morning.

The fire started around 8 a.m. on a boat docked on the west side of the river, just off Holland Avenue in Port Coquitlam.

Flames were visible from shore and a woman and her dog were injured in the blaze but the extent of their injuries is unknown.

"We're not sure what their status is," Delmonico said.

Firefighters said the flames had spread onto the dock by the time they arrived on scene, which made putting the fire out problematic.

"It's a fairly old, run-down area and the dock is not entirely safe to be putting people on," Delmonico said. "We've put our ladder up and we're throwing water down on it from there."

Thirteen firefighters were dispatched to the blaze, and were assisted from the water by a handful of private boats, including a tugboat.
