Interesting promo tactic?

The Oliver Fire Department is hosting its bi-annual spring seminar in May, and this year they've shed some light on the course with an eccentric video.

The short video — posted on Friday — was shot in town with members of the volunteer fire department. It was filmed by Erick Thompson, who runs ET2 Media.

"The idea was we wanted to get everybody hyped up and excited for it, and you get a little more interest," Rob Graham said, spokesperson for the Oliver Fire Department.

"Somebody showed us a commercial for a Call of Duty trailer, and we thought it'd be a good idea to spoof that."

Graham said the department received approval from Activision, the maker of COD, and from another company to use their music.

The video had more than 1,500 views on Youtube and nearly 6,000 more on Facebook by Wednesday afternoon, and Graham said the community has noticed.

"I know there are several of the guys who are in the video themselves who have had people stop them at school when they're dropping their kids off, or just stop them in town telling them that they enjoyed watching the video," Graham said.

He said the seminar typically draws about 300 to 400 volunteer firefighters from all over the province.

This year's course goes from May 4 to 6 at the Oliver Fire Hall and the Oliver Community Centre.

"We try to open it up to the public so they can walk through, have a look at what's going on and see just what kind of training is going on, not only at our department but others around the province."

More information on the seminar can be found here, and the full promo video can be viewed here.
