Running for hope

It'll be a winter wonderland at UBCO this Friday for the 5th annual UBCO Relay For Life.

Katelyn Baumbusch an organizer with UBCO’s Relay For Life says "We are inviting the entire Kelowna community to make teams and register for this event since it is the ONLY Relay Kelowna has."

The event will be held in the EME building and will feature exciting events and activities throughout the 12 hours.

Things get rolling at 6 p.m. with a Zumba class followed by a warm-up lap.

The event runs all night and features individuals taking turns walking, running or otherwise circling around a track “relay” style to raise funds to fight cancer.

One of the many highlights of the event is the luminaria service or candlelight vigil held at nightfall to honor cancer survivors and caregivers and to remember those lost to cancer.

The Canadian Cancer Society has been running the event since 1985 and it has now spread across the globe to more than 5,200 communities in more than 25 countries.

If you're still on the fence about joining the movement you can check out the last BBQ fundraiser this Thursday, Feb. 22 over the lunch hour, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. outside the UNC.
