Fire at abandoned motel

Fire crews responded to a small fire at the former Ponderosa Motel along Harvey Avenue in Kelowna Tuesday morning.

Firefighters arrived just before 9 a.m. at the boarded-up property.

"First arriving crews found that the back building had been breached. They entered and found a minor fire inside. They found one squatter that they assisted," said deputy fire chief Scott Cronquist.

The squatter wasn't injured and was assisted by RCMP at the scene.

"There was minor damage from this fire. We have been to this building several times in the past. It was boarded up pretty good, but they managed to get inside. They just started a fire to stay warm," Cronquist added.
