Kelowna

Record or not? It's cold!

UPDATE 8:02 a.m.

Let the debate begin.

According to Environment Canada's web site the temperature in Kelowna was a modern-day record but according to meteorologist Cindy Yu the records change and are more difficult track the further back you go.

The climate stations and meteorologists have moved over the years, "the daily minimum for Vernon today is minus 22.2 and for Kelowna, it's minus 19.4." Yu says Kelowna got down to minus 17.5 at the "official" weather station, which is not listed on their website.

There is a test station at the Kelowna airport that recorded a temperature of minus 19.6, but Yu says it's not official. "Over the years we've had different locations and slightly different instrumentation, from 1899 to 1962 there was the actual Kelowna station."

As for the website data, "The WNWSO station is probably looking at records from 1994 to about 2013, that means there are historical records that are colder. I wish I could tell you its a record it's pretty cold and its pretty close. Don't trust the daily records on the website."

Good to know, but what we all really want to know is when will it warm up?

"By the look of the weather pattern, going into Sunday we see a system trying to push its way across the province, probably by mid next week things should start to warm up. Until then this cold air mass is going to linger."

A tweet from Environment Canada attached below tells a different story again, perhaps weather, like beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

ORIGINAL 5:34 a.m.

More Frosty temperatures across the Okanagan this morning.

In Kelowna, the thermometer showed minus 17 at 5 a.m. and according to Environment Canada that breaks the record set back in 2009 when the temperature was minus 11.7.

Vernon also frosty at minus 17 as well, far colder than the coldest temp previously recorded at minus 8.4.

Penticton, likewise cold at minus 17 but not a record they hit minus 18 back in 1986.

Stay warm Okanagan.
