Viral Objects @ KAG

The idea behind a new exhibition at the Kelowna Art Gallery is a novel one – it explores what happens when a number of sculptural pieces created initially “go viral” and become the catalyst or springboard for further creations by others. The exhibition is aptly named Viral Objects and it is an interdisciplinary collaboration between first, second, and third year students at UBC Okanagan who are taking courses in Visual Arts, Creative Writing, Performance, and Media Studies.

The forty-five sculptural objects that started everything off are fascinating in themselves. They are all constructed completely from cardboard and are mostly life-sized or larger. The amount of tiny detail in the work is impressive. Visitors will recognize many familiar objects, such as a laptop computer, a canvas sneaker, an antique Underwood typewriter, a vintage Singer sewing machine, a household mop, a compass, and more among the many works.

These sculptures then went on to “infect” projects by students in other disciplines, resulting in performance pieces, drawings, audio soundscapes, films, written work, and additional sculptural pieces being created. In total, more than seventy students have contributed work to the exhibition. The result is a proliferation of art that speaks to our relationship to objects, to environments, and to each other.

The Kelowna Art Gallery would like to thank UBC Okanagan instructors Myron Campbell, Aleksandra Dulic, Denise Kenney, Renay Egami, Michael V. Smith, and Miles Thorogood, for organizing this collaboration.

Viral Objects is on view in The Front project space of the Kelowna Art Gallery, from February 10 to April 8, 2018.

A special Draw By Night with Myron Campbell will be held on Thursday, February 22, from 6 to 8 pm, at the Gallery. Draw By Night is a collaborative drawing party that is free and open to the public. The event will be held right in the exhibition space, which provides a unique opportunity for participants to view and interact with Viral Objects.

A reception to celebrate the exhibition will be held on Friday, March 23, 2018, from 6 to 8 pm. This is a free event, open to Gallery members and guests, by invitation.

The Kelowna Art Gallery is located at 1315 Water Street in downtown Kelowna. For more information about current exhibitions, public programming or special events, please visit www.kelownaartgallery.com or call the Gallery at 250-762-2226.
